Dr. Jolie Bookspan has been listening to her students for years, patiently finding the best way to get across difficult concepts of Human Physiology. Many of her students hated science, and with good reason. It can be so dry, especially when poorly taught. She had to develop new tricks to impart her knowledge, but more importantly she had to learn new ways of germinating interest in the subject so that her ideas would bear fruit. With this book, she has virtually redefined the art of teaching by exploiting humor as a form of "synaptic glue" seldom used in a serious scientific text. Her wit is fun and richly layered. That is what makes this book so compelling. She makes science delicious.

As you can see by now, I enjoyed reading this book immensely. It turns out to be one of the most valuable books in my collection for a number of reasons. First, as the manager of an interactive Diving Medicine web site for the University of Washington, I often find myself trying to teach Diving Physiology on-line to divers with a variety of backgrounds from the absolute neophyte to the scientist/colleague. Take for instance the subject of Immersion. After reading the chapter titled "Effects of Immersion," it struck me that those effects are not intuitive. It makes sense after you read it, but information on hydrostatic gradients and centralization of blood volume (Fat-Face-Chicken-Legs-Effect) was not only interesting but also invaluable to me as an educator. This book is not a "Read Once & Shelve Forever" type, but falls squarely into the "Read Often & Frequently Reference" category. In its place of honor beside my computer, my signed copy has started to look more like a well-used phone book than a physiology text.

I reviewed a sample of the most common "Frequently Asked Questions" taken on-line at my web site during the last two years of operation. It is uncanny how relevant this book is. Asthma, barotrauma, compartment off-gassing, decompression theory; it is all here and handled with the skill that comes from years of teaching. I was pleasantly surprised that many popular clinical topics were also covered in much more detail than I have come to expect. "Diving Headaches" (a common topic) was given three pages and is a masterpiece of completeness, as is "Oxygen Toxicity." With few exceptions, there is just about everything a diver needs to know here in fascinating detail.

My only disappointment was to find that the physiology of childhood and adolescence was missing. It would have been particularly relevant to have included it here in light of all the economic pressures to get divers in the water at an ever younger age. I strongly council parents to restrain themselves from pushing their children into the water with SCUBA gear for a few years into adolescence. The criticisms are few, the accolades many.

Dr Jolie Bookspan has written more that just a "handy compendium" (her words). This is an encyclopedia of the most valuable information a diver might want to know. A very entertaining way to learn and teach science. Yes, I do love this book!

About the Author
Dr. Jolie Bookspan is a research scientist in environmental physiology,  the effects on human physiology of heat, cold, altitude, outer space, G-forces, pressure, exercise, injury states, and immersion, sometimes all at once, and has a clinical practice in sports medicine. She completed a post-doc in altitude decompression and two fellowships in cold immersion and sports medicine. She worked almost nine years at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Institute For Environmental Medicine (IFEM), analyzing oxygen toxicity research - studies on hyperbaric, hypoxic, and hypercapnic response to rest and exercise.  For the Navy, worked in the cold immersion laboratory and during Desert Storm was transferred to Acceleration and G-Force Training Studies. She has been guest scientist at an underwater laboratory--living and working underwater,  advisor to The Discovery Channel, and taught anatomy at a college in Mexico in the mountains where the entrance exam was getting up there without a nosebleed.

About the Author

Richard Abcarian (PhD, University of California, Berkeley) is a professor of English emeritus at California State University, Northridge, where he taught for thirty-seven years. During his teaching career, he won two Fulbright professorships. In addition to editing Literature: The Human Experience and its compact edition, he is the editor of a critical edition of Richard Wright's A Native Son, as well as several other literature textbooks.

Marvin Klotz (PhD, New York University) was a professor of English emeritus at California State University, Northridge, where he taught for thirty-three years and won Northridge's distinguished teaching award in 1983. He was also the winner of two Fulbright professorships (in Vietnam and Iran) and was a National Endowment for the Arts Summer Fellow twice. In addition to editing Literature: The Human Experience and several other textbooks, he coauthored a guide and index to the characters in Faulkner's fiction.

Samuel Cohen (PhD, City University of New York) is Associate Professor of English and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Missouri. He is the author of After the End of History: American Fiction in the 1990s (University of Iowa Press, 2009), coeditor (with Lee Konstantinou) of The Legacy of David Foster Wallace (University of Iowa Press, 2012), Series Editor of The New American Canon: The Iowa Series in Contemporary Literature and Culture, and coeditor of JMMLA. He has also been published in such journals as Novel, Clio, Twentieth-Century Literature, The Journal of Basic Writing, and Dialogue: A Journal for Writing Specialists. For Bedford/St. Martin's, he is author of 50 Essays: A Portable Anthology and coauthor of Literature: The Human Experience.

After offering a basic definition of waves and explaining the mechanics of wind-wave generation, Raichlen describes how waves travel, how they shoal (rise), how they break, and how they transform in other ways. He goes on to describe, among other things, the complicated sun-Earth-moon combinations that create astronomical tides (the high and low tides that occur daily and predictably); the effects of waves on the beach, including rip currents and beach erosion, and on harbors and shipping; and the building of breakwaters to protect harbors and bays. He discusses hurricanes, storm surges, and hurricane-generated waves. He offers a brief history of tsunamis, including Sumatra's in 2004 and Japan's in 2011 and explains the mechanisms that generate them (including earthquakes, landslides, and volcanoes).

Just as quality film photos by serious photographers were finished in the chemical darkroom, serious digital photographers---almost without exception---include working in the digital darkroom as part of their workflow.

When I give a workshop or in-person presentation of my work someone nearly always raises their hand and asks, "Was that 'Photoshopped'?"

My response is, "Yes. And with my work the answer will always be 'Yes'."

I am not alone in using Photoshop as part of my work. In fact, whether they will publicly admit it or not, almost every professional or serious amateur photographer uses Photoshop or other post-production software to enhance their work. The question is not whether it is used. The question is simply whether the tools of digital post-production are used skillfully.

So if you are looking for a photography book that will tell you how to get it right without using the digital darkroom, The Way of the Digital Photographer is not for you. By the way, it never was possible to get it right without involving post-production. For example, Ansel Adams put huge effort into manipulating his images long after they had left the camera to make his wonderful prints. Digital photography is best when photography and Photoshop work together!

Example Photos and Commentary Flowers of Late Summer

Dahlias tend to bloom later than the other flowers in my garden, so I enjoyed the opportunity to photograph these end-of-summer blossoms on my light box. After creating an image of the flowers with a white background, I added them to a background and used a texture effect to cut the "harshness" of the background and create a pleasing overall image.

Exposure and processing information: 35mm, six exposures at shutter speeds ranging from 10 seconds to 1/10 of a second, all exposures at f/13 and ISO 100, tripod mounted; exposures combined using Nik HDR Efex Pro and hand-HDR in Adobe Camera RAW and Photoshop; I also added a scanned paper background and light texturize overlay to this version.

On an overcast, gray day, I took the RER (Réseau Express Régional) out of central Paris to the suburb of Bourg-la-Reine. From the train station in Bourg-la-Reine I carried my gear the mile or so to the Parc de Sceaux (pronounced "Park de So"). The Parc de Sceaux is a less-well-known masterpiece of landscape design by André Le Nôtre, the seventeenth-century landscape architect of Louis XIV responsible for the gardens at Versaille, the Tuilleries, and other famous formal French gardens.

As I explored the area, my concern was that the looming clouds might turn to rain, making photography difficult. But as I approached the long channel of water that radiated across the width of the gardens in a cross formation, the clouds parted and the sun emerged, making the reflections just so...beautiful!

This image is a composite blend of five exposures. Each exposure was shot using a 35mm lens on my full-frame camera at f/11 and ISO 100, with shutter speeds ranging from 1/30 of a second to 1/500 of a second. I used a circular polarizer to enhance the reflections, and combined the exposures in Photoshop using layers and masking.



Bixby Bridge by Starlight

Over the years, I’ve enjoyed photographing the dramatic Bixby Bridge on the Big Sur coast of California at night, and it is always fun to take a workshop group to this location. Getting out of the car, it is hard at first to see much in the inky blackness except that it is a long way down to the Pacific Ocean. As things resolve, it becomes clear that one can create interesting images, provided one keeps the camera open long enough, since there really isn’t much light. But in this case the camera sees more than we do!

Exposure and processing information: Nikon D800, Zeiss 15mm f/2.8 lens, ten exposures, each exposure at four minutes, f/2.8 and ISO 500, tripod mounted; exposures stacked using the Photoshop CC Statistics script, enhanced using LAB color adjustments.
