I landed in the world of comics somewhat by chance.

I had studied literature, and I always dreamed of writing, but I never imagined I’d become a comic book author. It’s all thanks to Sylvain. Before meeting him, I didn’t really read comics (I must have read Tarzan when I was 13, and my next comic book was Blue Pills by Frederik Peeters when I was 23).

Stupidly, I believed that comics were for children, for men who refused to grow up or for people who didn’t like to read very much. In Poland, where I was born, no one tried to change my mind. There, during my childhood, comics were a marginal art form. Thanks to Sylvain, I plunged into comics not only as a reader but almost simultaneously as an author. The Marzi adventure started in 2005.

In the beginning, I struggled with my role. I was always hiding behind Sylvain who had an established career as a comics artist. He’s the one who carried Marzi on his shoulders for several years. But little by little, with the publication of each new volume, I learned (and I’m still learning) to better manage my work as scriptwriter, and my place in this world became more stable. I began to understand the importance of my work. It wasn’t by chance. Not anymore. And I didn’t want to be the author of only one comic book.

One day, I met a Polish illustrator: Krzysztof Gawronkiewicz. I liked his drawings a lot, and I wanted to work with him. At the time, I was in the midst of reading the poems of a Polish poet who wrote about the war. A few of them referenced the Warsaw Uprising in 1944.

This uprising is often confused with the uprising of the Warsaw ghetto in 1943. It was the last hope, the last attempt--powerful and at the same time desperate--of the Polish people to regain their freedom from the Nazis. It was expected to last 4 or 5 days, but it ended after 63 days. It was a true death knell to Warsaw. The Red Army had arrived on the outskirts of the city, and halted near the Vistula River, waiting for the Germans and the Poles to kill each other. Then, they arrived as the victor in the lifeless capital, and established communism. The Russians, thanks to their non-intervention, kept that historic event in the shadows (and made sure it stayed there) which is why it barely exists in Western minds.

The uprising isn’t an easy topic. It’s vast and has always stirred up a number of controversies about its meaning. But it’s a real-life story that needs to be told, and it will be the subject of my next comic, working with Kryzsztof. It’s a huge job for us and a terrific challenge that we have thrown ourselves into with great enthusiasm.

I don’t know if, working on another project that once again takes the history of Poland as its subject, I run the risk of being categorized as a Polish author, but at the same time, I know I have many other stories in my bottom drawer that aren’t necessarily about Poland, but in which no doubt my Polish sensibility, my Polishness, shines through. It’s something I’ll never escape, but I also don’t want to escape it. It’s where I find my strength. And for me, for now, it feels vital to write about my country.

Marzena Sowa was born in Stalowa Wola, Poland. As a young girl she dreamt about living in France, free from communist rule. Marzi is her first graphic novel created in collaboration with artist and partner Sylvain Savoia..

They're not reading 'chapter books' just yet - they're great with the typical, simple and short kid-books we read front-to-back each night. I have 'Extreme Ownership' and was concerned JW's style may be too advanced, dry, preachy or over my twins' heads...WotWK proved me wrong!With "Way of the Warrior Kid," I set the expectation of one chapter a night. Once finished with the single chapter I tell them the name of tomorrow night's chapter to whet their appetite. Invariably, they beg, "One more chapter! Just one more!" It's written in a great first-person style the kids relate to. The illustrations and "I stink" humor of the wimpy Marc engage my kiddos and there is anticipation built into each chapter that makes us wanting to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next. Salt.Jocko's jiu-jitsu training has moved from the mat to the written word: the lessons are not delivered with telegraphed haymakers but with 'subliminal, verbal judo' and allegory.I'm so glad I took a chance and got this for our family. Lessons and lectures from dad can meet with resistance and eye-rolling (akin to teaching my wife handgun skills), but coming from a third party the instruction is eagerly welcomed! "...a prophet is not accepted in his hometown..."Now they are more eager to exercize (loved how they lit up when "burpees" were mentioned in the book - "hey, we know them, Dad! You taught us those!") And when it is homework or get-ready time I remind my kids about Marc and Uncle Jake - and suddenly they're all in. They used to whine when it was mean ol' dad asking, but they'll do what's needed when characters they admire/identify with or like from the book show them the benefit of discipline.If this became a franchise ala 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' we'd be all in for future installments. Reading this has opened us up to more substantive reading - we'll weave in some quality kids books to our nightly reading that are beyond the fluff of kittens, Minecraft and Dr.Seuss thanks to TWotWK.The book will definitely support the 'all in, all the time' credo we're inculcating into our little ones.HOOYAH!p.s. "Zero dark-thirty" is now a part of my son's vocabulary and he laughs every time he says it and my daughter loves to say how she and mom need garbage can lids being clanged to wake up. It's been a great opportunity for bonding and laughing (while sneakily influencing their behavior!).

I got my first experience with Jocko from his other book Extreme Ownership and liked what he had to say.So, I bought this book so that my 8 yr old son and I could read it together. 1. To toughen him up a little and 2. To get him interested in reading on his own.Each night we would read 2-3 chapters before bedtime and before long, he kept asking me during the day if we were going to read it again that night.We both started referencing points in the book at times when something reminded us of it and began sharing the stories with friends and family.Before the end of the book, my son would be getting up early, setting his alarm to be the second out of bed, after dad.At the end of the book, my son asked if we could buy the 2nd book in the series...It's been about a week since we finished the book and last night he began reading the book on his own from the start.This is exactly what we needed. We pick up the story as the child is eating the last bites of pudding.Dad reaches the spoon into the cup one last time, scraping the bottom, then feeding his son the last chocolatey spoonful."All done!", He exclaimed before sitting back to relish in the satisfaction of having successfully flanked his stubborn son into taking his medicine."But wait...", he thought, "My mouth tastes funny..."He instinctively wiped the edges of his mouth, only to discover chocolate pudding on his fingertips."That's weird. I didn't take a single bite of that pudding."Suddenly he sensed the presence of someone other than his son. As he turned his gaze, their eyes locked."J-j-j-j-jocko?!", he stuttered."Good Evening, Dad", grumbled a smirking Jocko Willink."How did you... What are you...""I am sorry, Dad. This was the only way for me to get YOU to take YOUR medicine."Jocko went on to explain how he pulled off this elaborate con known in the SEAL Teams as The Willink Switcharoo. The objective of The Willink Switcharoo is for Jocko to implant an idea into someone's mind so stealthily that they believe they came up with it. With his target consumed with the execution of "their" idea, Jocko is able to slip in and administer the needed intervention to the unconscious target.After realizing what happened, Dad was speechless. This book tells big, dramatic stories about the history of the American military. You'll read about the gun battle between black soldiers and white police officers in Houston during World War I, and the mass trials and hurried group execution that followed. You'll get the story of the captured Sioux warriors who were tried by a military commission during the Civil War, men on trial for their lives who didn't speak English and didn't know they were on trial -- until after they were sentenced to death for killing unprotected settlers. And you'll learn about the desperation of the Modoc warriors who ambushed unarmed American soldiers who had come to negotiate with them, another event that led to a flawed trial and the hurried construction of shared gallows.

These are just a few examples of the events I describe. My goal with this book was to ground serious history and a careful exploration of ideas with real storytelling. I put events and people in the foreground.

Alongside stories of the way military courts addressed military conflicts and served the political purposes of the armed forces, you'll read about the way that larger social and political conflicts reached into the world of the armed forces and changed the way military discipline worked.

During the first half of the nineteenth century, for example, flogging was a centerpiece of the way the U.S. Navy disciplined ordinary sailors. When Congress banned naval flogging in 1850, their decision reflected an entirely unrelated controversy: Abolitionists took up brutal navy punishments as a way of attacking slavery, drawing a connection between forms of harsh physical coercion. When Congress voted, the roll call in both houses broke down along sectional lines: Northerners mostly voted to ban naval flogging, while Southerners -- offended by the presence of abolitionists in the debate -- voted against the ban. The American debate over slavery changed the way the navy could discipline its personnel at sea.

For another example, consider dueling. The Articles of War forbade both dueling and a range of associated offenses -- like serving as a second, or challenging another soldier to duel. During the Civil War, the War Department in the North issued regulations expanding the meaning of a "duel" to mean any challenge to fight between any soldiers, including privates.

But the gentlemen officers who served on courts-martial refused to consider a challenge between privates to be part of a "duel." They arrived believing that only gentlemen could actually duel, and only if they went through the correct ritual forms like the appointment of a second. Mere privates and sergeants, not being gentlemen, couldn't challenge each other to duel -- they could only challenge each other to fight to the death, which didn't count. They acquitted defendants who were charged with dueling but lacked the necessary social status to actually participate in the social ritual of the duel, and it didn't matter that War Department regulations said something different. Social knowledge trumped legal regulations.
